Doesn't he also pull off moves in FA nobody thought was possible on a consistent basis because he is a fricking cap wizard(and imo by far the best in the biz at manipulating the cap)?
Right. He fixes his mistakes. And the only reason we had a pulse on defense for years was because we HAD to sign free agents there. Certainly hadn't drafted any worthwhile defenders for years outside of 5-6 guys over more than a decade

If he isn't involved in scouting, wouldn't he be fixing OTHER people's mistakes?

He fixes his mistakes.
We got screwed on Smith because his contract was prior to the new CBA when the cap was ballooning and we could easily fit him under. When the new CBA went into affect it threw things out of whack for us and we navigated that as best as we could.
Harper's contract was a mistake in hindsight, but it was definitely because the coaching staff was pushing to keep him and at the time he was coming off of a really good year. You don't have the ability to see into the future when negotiating contracts.
There hasn't been much else that we totally fricked up on. Can you list more of these mistakes you speak of?
