Now, it may seem silly to draft a nickel guy in the first round, but keep in mind that teams are spending something like 60%-70% of snaps in sub packages. I think you saw a lot of 3-4 safety formations last year in part because of our lack of coverage linebackers.
maybe that is another reason teams are running the ball so well on us too. The Saints did a lot better last year against the run than they did in 2012 but still.. that was one area where teams still were able to beat us the most it seemed like.
I think some of it is because we don't have a lot of speed at the LB position?
the pass defense was pretty damn good and while having a coverage LB would be nice and all... I want a LB that can be a sideline-to-sideline guy that makes a ton of tackles and who is relentless.
maybe Shazier could do that. I don't know. Never really saw him play much until people started posting some links on him on this board.

The frequency of our sub packages was a calculated risk, and yes, it did leave us vulnerable to getting gashed in the run from time to time.
Lofton and Hawthorne are both downhill players. Hawthorne seemed to be able to get to the outside than Lofton could. Lofton had a lot of missed tackles because he simply didn't have the speed to get to the outside at times and had to leave his feet in order to have a chance at making the tackle.
Shazier would be the fastest guy on the defense if we drafted him. One of the knocks against him is he's too aggressive at times and will over run plays.
