I think we'll see the league demonstrate what they think in the near future. IMO he was clearly going for the head and lead with the shoulder to drive through in as punishing of a fashion as possible.
IMO there was absolutely no reasonable doubt that he intended to deliver a devastating hit to the head and he took advantage of the other player not being aware enough of his surroundings to deliver that hit.

It seems like all big hits wind up being perceived that way, hell, I'm guilty of it myself.
Watch in real time, there wasn't much he could have done.
Hell, try to find some slow mo gifs of marginal hits in slow motion, watch them a few times and tell me they're not dirty.
It is what it is, the good thing about hockey is the guys making the calls after the fact are hockey players. If he gets suspended (Which I expect, I'll support it.) But there wasn't ill intent, I don't think.
