There are 1.6 billion Muslims in the world. I'm sorry but it's not right to treat every Muslim you come in contact with harshly because of the extremists. The percentage of extremist is a small fraction of the total number of Muslims.
Back on topic though, people will be more apprehensive to condemn a group that has been a target historically and who is a minority. Same with blacks and gays.
