This is the correct answer. Not just a noise maker either. There are plenty of breeds that make loving and loyal pets and are formidable enough to not only handle businesses but sound the part when they bark.
We have a lab/mastiff mix and a blue heeler/pit mix and if there is ever someone in our yard or driveway we know they are there and they know that we have proper dogs. With the dogs there and the shotgun in the closet my wife does pretty well.
