I read an article saying that they'll explain in Avengers 2 why some of the characters haven't been around. I remember Hawkeye and Hulk specifically being mentioned.

The fact that they gave Peggy Carter Alzheimers was hard to watch. Also, Emily VanCamp's character is Sharon...Carter. Notice how she said her "aunt is a bit of an insomniac". In the comics, she is Peggy's niece.
