Take the word "marriage" out of it all. Everyone gets to have the basic civil contract for coupling with all the rights that go along with what is traditionally seen as "marriage." Leave the term "marriage" to the churches.
This is my view on it, but both sides get way too much mileage out of riling up their voting base to ever let that happen.
For me I am a Christian and i don't agree with it, but i would never be so presumptuous as to try and impose my beliefs on them. Being religious and following the word of God is a personal decision and one you have to make of your own free will for it to mean anything. Using the law to impose your beliefs onto the unwilling does way more harm than good.
You have a whole generation that's growing up believing that Christians are these hateful people who want to bring America back to the middle ages. Of course it's BS, but when all they see are people protesting with "God hates figs" signs (and it's not just WBC) and all they hear about Christians spending obscene amounts of money on lobbyist to legislate their beliefs onto the populous, how are the sane among us supposed to reach them?
