On the other hand, if you work for $7 an hour these days--without food stamps or stealing or dumpster diving--you probably will starve.

I don't see the "illegals", who are being paid $7/hr, starving at all.

This is one of America's main problems these days....people expect to make lots of money while not having to really work for it. There are plenty examples of folks working more than one job or multiple shifts at one job for minimum wage and they make ends meet.

And they often need government assistance. In other words, taxpayers are subsidizing employers. Walmart being the famous example.

I'm curious, when you say you "see the illegals," do you mean that you actually know some of these people, speak with them or have an intimate understanding of their situations? If so, I'm glad to know that $7 per hour is a true living wage these days, in contradiction to virtually every other statistical indicator, including the U.S. Census Bureau's poverty threshold for one individual under age 65 ($11,490 as of 2013).

In fact, wages and salaries have stagnated over the past decade. This has been widely reported, and indeed, can be verified by the vast majority of working Americans. For your reference, I offer the Economic Policy Institute's The State of Working America, 12th Edition (Mishel et al. 2012).

I agree that there are "plenty of examples of folks working more than one job." Plenty and plenty of examples in fact. Just how well or satisfactorily they make ends meet is another question in my opinion.
