Clearly this redneck was just jealous that his stepdaughter was stepping out on him.
And why in earth wouldn't you charge the dude with battery? What's the issue? I mean whether we would've done the same thing in his shoes isn't really relevant.

Lets change the perspective. If your son or brother was caught porking a chick by her dad and then shot/ beaten up, what would you do? I for one would beat the dudes arse. Only guy who beats my lil bro is me.
