he can make a living without a degree and not in the blue collar world, but it's much harder and within 10 years, he'll be wishing he went to school

Unless he's going for something specialized(engineer, lawyer, doctor, accountant) college is basically paying tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars for a piece of paper with his name on it after however many years it takes to get it.
There's nothing wrong with going straight to work. Chances are the knowledge and skills he will need in whatever career path he chooses will all be learned from work experience, not the classroom. If he can prove he's good at whatever he wants to do and is good at networking, those are the things that are going to lead to a successful career. Not whatever bullshite he is "learning" in a college classroom
