Anyone use this offshore? How does it compare to the belt? Never been but I've seen them used on TV

Those things are fine for AJ and large lemonfish, but for a tuna you're gonna want a belt and shoulder straps. Tuna will put the fear of God into your lower back, and the shoulder straps allow you to put the stress on your shoulders and legs.

Those butt cushon things do not distribute the pressure from the rod enough. A t-bar works MUCH better

And as far as a reel and rod go, you can catch a good deal on Penn International reels on Ebay. I got my cousin brand new 50sw for less than $400 as a groomsman gift. If you look for used, you can scoop up a good deal. I would think a 30 would be all you need. Cheap rods are much easier to find.
