Had a 1996 caravan similar thing happened. I was able to get it to a transmission shop and they told me to junk it because it needed a rebuild. I had already dropped the pan and didn't find any metal shavings. I instead but a computer module for the transmission and swapped it. Worked fine after that.
I would drop the pan to see if there are any metal shavings.

This was my first thought since the motor keeps quitting. It sounds electrical/computer to me.
