I'm in Texas so it's pro ably a little different. I do believe you car is considered an extension to.your home.
Regardless,if an unknown person gets into to my car forcefully (uninvited), I can only assume be means me harm and will protect myself.

I think you can only use deadly force is your life is danger. So if someone is breaking into you car and you are not in it you can not shoot them.
Now if you are in the car and you feel like your life is on danger you can use deadly force.
As for as the OP question, I think you can hold a criminal at gun point while waiting for the police. However, knowing cops these days they will shoot you and let the criminal go.
