This was the exact thing the Germans thought in June of 1941. Except on top of all that, the Red Army had just gone through Stalin's purges of the 30's where the vast majority of capable Red Army officers were either shot or imprisoned in Siberia.

He was right. Many Soviet troops on the front didn't have guns. It wasn't the Soviet war machine that stopped the Germans, it was the winter and too many other concerns.
