It was like bad...and then natural....bad again....then natural again, for most of the scene.

I think as he neared the trigger pull his performance was more convincing, but the moment was already blown with the up and down acting.

It was superficially odd, but it illustrated his choice. He was flashing between grief and wrath, and in the end, he chose wrath, and that's when John Doe's plan came to fruition.
