Most if not all of those troops are permanently stationed at leased Russian military bases in Crimea.

Yes but they are not in those bases they are out in Crimea surrounding Ukrainian military installations, airports, radio stations, border checkpoints, and government buildings.

His end game could be control of Ukraine but that doesn't have a bunch of benefits other than controlling a lot of land that has Russian pipelines running through it and a little better position within the Black Sea.

He doesn't have a bunch to gain from taking Ukraine IMO.

He gains large uranium mines in a country largely powered by soviet era nuclear power plants. That is significant as many of their power plants were built like the Chernobyl plant, a weapons grade plant that was also used to provide electricity.

On the other side of Asia the Chinese are testing missiles with the range to reach Guam, and exerting pressure when and where ever they desire to do so. Is there a pattern in these events? Can we expect more strongly worded statements from DC as a result of these developments?

attack first, ask questions later. Its the neo-con way.

ACtually it is more like talk about attacking for a year or so first, the attack, then complain about having to use the military you have instead of the one you want, then claim you had no idea what was going to happen when you created a power vacuum in the region and then have absolutely no exit plan or end game in mind....then ask questions later, but only questions that make the neo-cons feel good about themselves...

Has John McCain ever met a war he didn't like immediately?

that's true, if our guy wanted to make a splash he would have had one of our new naval laser weapons on hand to shoot down the Russian rocket as a counter demo.

I don't think they are at that point yet...I think they miss about as much as they don't at this point.

But it would have been a great idea to fricking send Putin, as crazy as he apparently is, to the fricking edge by shooting down a single missile while being unable to shoot down the other 3 or 4 thousand they have waiting.

Russia is not fricking Iraq or Afghanistan or even 1930's Germany as formidable as that was....Russia is an animal that you do not want to provoke. For the sake of mankind the neo-cons have got to realize that this is not a fricking Iraq/Afghanistan situation. Do we really want to end mankind over Ukraine? Poland? The Czech Republic? Germany is probably the line....

One thing for sure...it was beginning to look like US civilian opportunities in Western Europe were going to become fewer and farther between. This thing has put us back on a cold war footing for the forseeable future and for some of us that is an economic boom!

Why don't we start announcing new natural gas contracts with European countries? Shouldn't that be equivalent to firing our own ICBM?

I am ignorant of such things but is delivery possible? Liquid natural gas is about as volatile a substance as there is, isn't it? Is it possible to build a pipeline to Europe? Shipping seems cost prohibitive. I know the Germans would do a Halley Barry "Jungle Fever" act if they had a stable source of affordable natural gas that Russia didn't threaten to shut off every few months.....

US citizens have war fatigue and Obama doesn't have the backbone to buck the pressure

Not only are the citizens tired of war the Military is worn completely out....if the economy weren't as slow as it is we would be forced to give military personnel some serious bonuses for re-enlistments because the poor bastards have been used and abused for 12 years. I know it is what they signed up for but that doesn't mean the fricked up knees and backs are any better than they would be if they were conscripted knees and backs....

Military equipment is also worn the frick out. All branches of the Military need a time out....but of course the world is not ready to allow that just yet....

This is true...

what stadium is in the WPA picture? Is that UT or LSU (the end zones look like UT but I don't know if LSU did the same thing at some time).

The first chess move we should have made was to tap as many oil and gas resources as we can to not be reliant on foreign oil and gas, and hopefully get Europe off Russian O & G.

While I agree we should have long ago worked on energy independence (and it doesn't have to be oil and gas) but why should we be concerned about Europe's energy needs? This is why we are in the predictament we are in today...because we are Mommy and Daddy to most of the world....
