Its geography alone makes Crimea important on a global level.

How does it affect US interests?

Are we traveling up out of the Black Sea regularily?

I understand that Crimea is important for people IN THAT AREA, but what does it do to the US?

Russia is considered a foe of the United States. We are considered the leaders of the free world. If Russia, one of our biggest enemies, can march into a country and annex it with impunity, we look weak. That hurts us diplomatically and may affect our ability to do business in other places of the world where we have vested interests.

Because it's Russia's aquatic gate to Western Civilization. The French and the British helped fight an entire war (The Crimean War) to keep Russia from having this access. The Russians ended up eventually getting after WWII and even after the fall of the USSR has retained a lease over the Sevastopol port in order to operate Russian trade.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the group behind the overthrow of the Ukraine leadership has plans for Sevastopol that go against Russian interest and that this is the catalyst behind all of this.

So the TL;DR version - really fricking important for US foreign interest as it concerns Russia.
