You're attempting to connect two completely different situations. Thanking God and "coming out" are very different scenarios. Do you think there would have been a bunch of applause had he gone up there and said "and I'd like to thank the people around me because that's all that matters and there is certainly no higher power to give thanks to". I'll bet there wouldn't be.
