You will change your mind on DDL if you watch GONY. A bit long, but Bill the Butcher is one of the great characters on film for me.
Love that character. I just don't understand how so many can anoint someone who has such a small resume' as the greatest actor alive. He hasn't really shown the range either to transition into other genres of film. Besides, Lincoln and TWBB were tailor made for him and Oscar fodder extraordinaire. That's not taking anything away from his performances in any of those movies. I just think it is a different sort of skill to be able to pump out good-great performances on an annual/semi-annual basis than get caught up in one character every blue moon.
AND I'm not even saying that he couldn't do it. I just don't think we will ever get the opportunity to see him broaden his scope, which would be very, very entertaining imo.
ETA: I am referring to recent works of his, not past works.

I really don't know how you call anyone "the best" either. He doesn't work like other actors thats for sure but as to range?
Abe Lincoln to Bill the Butcher?
Christy Brown(my left foot) to Hawkeye?
As good as anyone I think.
