Shakespeare in Love winning over Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture will rustle my jimmies until the end of time
This one has become so overrated now that it's underrated.
I watched SiL recently to see, and it holds up much better than SPR. Honestly. It's a great film about the creative process. It brings a unique perspective, it's a ton of fun, while being a farce, a meta-commentary, and a fine pseudo-historical piece.
Outside of the first 15 minutes, SPR does absolutely nothing new. But a movie is more than an opening.
I think some just can't separate film quality from content. Of course to some people war, and specifically that day, will trump anything else, no matter the quality. But SiL is just a better film overall, made a lot more sense to the Academy, and I think it will be something like The Third Man, which doesn't get respect until 30-40 years later.

I respect that.

Since when does a movie have to do something new to win Best Picture? Shakespeare in Love was a clever film, I love it, but Saving Private Ryan has impacted the film industry more so than Shakespeare in Love despite doing "something new".
Saving Private Ryan is a technical masterpiece.
