Not to be gross but on of my earliest memories is playing doctor with a girl when we were in kindergarten. Kids get curious when they realize their bits and pieces are different.

Neither of us had awful home lives and as far as I know nothing bad ever happened to her w/a relative or anything. We are still friend on Facebook even.

It could be something as simple as one of them walked in on their parents having sex and they were given an awkward sex talk that confused them.

Also, "having sex" could just be how whoever found them described it even though they may not have literally been having sex.
