Take it on shorter adventures before running a marathon with them. That being said, my 28# boykin can run 3 miles with me in the dead of summer without much of an issue. I exercise her year-round and in all weather conditions. The key is to keep them hydrated and cool. If it is really hot, I'll hose her down before we run and make sure she drinks water.

My black lab, Pete, runs with me outside of hunting season in the morning. We do 5 miles and he freaking loves it. Goes inside after, drinks a bowl of water, and crashes for about an hour.
