That was why the studio went behind his back and did its own edits and test screenings. Came back with the conclusion that it wasn't really quite as bad as they had anticipated and that their edits didn't test much better with the religious zealots than Aranofsky's.

I'm pretty excited about it, frankly. Russell Crowe is a solid actor and I'll be interested to see how Aronofsky handles a big budget. The effects look absolutely amazing, and you know the story will be intricate and thoughtful and there will be shots that take your breath away.

Yeah, I saw the flaming sword and the wall of fire and knew this movie was going to be completely different from what I was thinking initially.
