Wow! I'd never heard that story.

Back in 2000 in Omaha, my family and I sat next to Hawthorne's dad in Rosenblatt for one of the LSU games, the USC game I think. He was the nicest older gentleman you'd ever want to talk to. We didn't know who he was until about the third inning when after talking with him the first couple of innings I introduced myself. When he introduced himself as "Hawthorne" I asked if he was related to Jim Hawthorne and he said, 'yep, he's my son.'

I then started searching my memory to see if I'd said anything bad about Jim calling games but I think I was safe.
