the latter definitely is biting us in the arse.
And he certainly is still cuttable this year if we really wanted to go elsewhere. As a June 1st cut he saves $2 mil with only $1.5 mil in dead money.
Plus it's ALWAYS going to be only the older guys that this is an option with because the younger guys are on cheap contracts, and when they sign their big contracts the numbers are low in the first few years until they get to about 30ish.
So the only guys we can restructure are the older guys and we need the cap room so it will happen(unless we cut them or they take a pay cut).
Evans is sticking around so he's almost a sure bet to get a restructure, while I think Colston and Grubbs are each 50/50.
If you do Brees this year that's that much less you save next year when we need to redo him so it doesn't make sense to do him this year unless you want to sign a bunch of free agents or some top tier guys.
Plus, even with restructures, we still have the option to June 1st cut Evans, Grubbs, and/or Colston next year and still save a pretty penny.
So really if we need the money we are either going to cut or restructure these guys(they aren't in a weak position to take pay cuts). Both save you money, but one loses you the player. So ask yourself what you'd rather for each one this year.

He's still more expensive to cut in terms of dead money. Looking into the specifics, they did only convert his $3m roster bonus into a signing bonus, so it's not as much money as I suspected. Unfortunately he's cheaper to keep than cut until his final season. Hopefully he goes back to his Seattle days and it becomes a moot point. He definitely had some really good games last season.
