I wouldnt say Spikes is easily replaceable. And I think you undervalue him, while I might overvalue him a bit. PFF has Spikes ranked at the #6 ILB in the league. And the best run stopping MLB in the game. A MLBs job is to 1st stop the run

Im not saying hes not good, just that the Pats have in very good in house replacements for him and he wont be worth bringing back at his pricetag. They drafted Collins last year, partially because they knew Spikes would be gone this offseason

quote:

And isnt Belichick a huge fan of Spikes?

Not really. They've butted heads a bit with some of Spikes off the field behavior and missing meetings and the like. I wouldn't consider him a coach favorite

quote:

But I just think Spikes is 1 of the 3 most impactful players on the Pats D along with Chandler Jones and Talib

Yeah you deffintly overrate him

Chandler Jones, Talib, Nink, Devin McCourty (the most underrated and best free safety in the game), Mayo, and Wilfork all have way bigger impacts during each game than Spikes

quote:

And Nicks might be cheaper, but hes a $$$ whore and will go to the highest bidder

The highest bidder wont be that high. He didn't score any touhdowns this year. that's a huge redflag for a guy that supposed to be a redzone threat

quote:

But Kenny Britt is the type of player that Belichick takes a shot on. Hes done it a lot in the past and most of the time it turns out to be a great move. Hes 1 of the few coaches, or the only coach, that seems to be able to corral players with off the field issues and turns them into very productive players and revives their careers. Im not saying the Pats should go after him, but they could sign him cheap and hes a very talented WR. If Belichick can work his magic, he could turn him back into a big time WR. Not saying they will or should, but I do think its something interesting to watch.

I wouldn't be against the move (I was for it during the trading deadline) but I wouldn't expect anything from him (which is what this thread is based on). Hes worth a flyer but hes closer to Lamont Jordan than he is Randy moss at this point imo.

I agree that its not typical of them to take a skill player early on due to their system. But this is also the 1st year in a while that their lack of weapons as the skill positions are evident.

They knew there would be growing pains this year. All three rookie WRs flashed potential throughout the year. The Pats are not going to panic all of a sudden after their 3rd straight AFC title game

Read this. It comes from the top down. And its the reason the Pats are aways good

quote:

And who said anything about replacing Dobson?

The entire thread is about finding the Pats a #1 WR. Im arguing Dobson has a better chance at being that than a guy they will find at the end of the first round and its pretty illogical to expect a rookie to come in as the #1 outside WR when you just saw what usually happens for rookie WRs in the Pats system.

quote:

n my 1st post in here I said: if they like Dobsons development and feel comfortable with him as their WR of the future and dont want to spend a 1st rounder on a WR, try and trade up into the mid 2nd round and take a guy like Jarvis Landry

Would love to have Landry but the Pats and trading up don't really belong in the same sentence and the PAts don't have much ammo to trade up this year as it is after some bad trades like the Isopo trade

quote:

. But even if Dobson develops and becomes the type of WR that they need, they still need help at other skill player spots

The pats have gone as far as you go without a true #1 guy, if they got Dobson to that level they wouldn't need much else

quote:

And the Pats arguably had the most injured WRs and TEs in the entire league. Edelman, Amendola, Gronk, Dobson, Vereen, and KT all were banged up this year

and to be fair the Pats probably had the most injuries in the entire league this year. I wouldn't expect that massive bad luck to continue this year

quote:

But Boyce barely saw the field this year.

When he finally did, he showed flashes of a solid #2 guy and a good kick returner. it wont show up on the stat sheet but I saw it with my own eyes

But again you have to wait til after year two to judge these guys either way. The Pats always have a player or two that explodes in his second year

quote:

Its not a good sign that Boyce couldnt play over Austin Collie

Collie had a better ability to grasp the playbook than him. and Collie would have never gotten another call from the Pats if boyce didn't get put on IR late in the year. I don't think its fair to judge a rookie mid round pick and a veteran with experience in a complex offense

quote:

Im not discounting Dobson at all. Youre putting words in my mouth and acting like I said anything negative about Dobson. I didnt. In fact i said the opposite.

I don't mean it like that. I just think it would be a mistake to think someone else would have a better shot at being the #1 WR the OP is asking about than a guy you can get at the end of the first round

But this is fun wildtigercat, we usually agree on most things so its not to get into a good debate with you over this

That's the beauty of this board when its not in full retard mode

Wasnt sure of the Belichick/ Spikes relationship... just remember hearing something during the broadcast where they were saying that Spikes is a Belichick type of player and loves the way he plays.

In his prime, I would have said Wilfork is more impactful than Spikes. But hes out of his prime. 32 years old and coming back from an achilles tear. And when he did play in the early part of the season he was having his worst year by far. 5 total tackles in 3 games and 1 series. Not good. And i like WIlfork too. Hes just not the same player he was in the past.

And I like Mayo too. But when he was playing this year he only had 1 good game and it was vs Cincy. And hes pretty much the opposite of Spikes. Not good against the run (30 out of 35 OLBs on PFF). He was 14 out of 35 in pass coverage though. Which is solid. But overall rankings he was 28 out of 35 OLBs. Def was 1 of his worst years when playing.

And I forgot about Nink. And McCourty is a damn good FS. Wouldnt call him the best haha but hes really good. Should have said that Spikes is 1 of the 5 most impactful players on the Pats D along with Jones, Talib, Nink, and McCourty.

And I agree that Nicks contract wont be as high as people or Nicks thought it would be due to his play this year. But hes still a good WR and somebody will make a dumb move and give him a good payday. Bigger than the Pats could afford. Plus, the Pats already have 2 pass catchers that are injury prone in Gronk and Amendola. Doubt they go sign Nicks in FA.

And the Pats have had #1 guys. Just not at WR in the past few years. 1 of them is now in jail for a very long time, and the other cant seem to get healthy / stay healthy.

Collie was signed in early October. He played and caught 2 passes vs the Saints on Oct 13. Only took him a week to grasp the playbook better than a guy that went through mini camp and beginning of the season?
