Massive avalanches cut off Valdez via road to the Outside

Series of avalanches caused by rain and warmer weather put snow 100 ft deep on the road at Keystone Canyon. The ice dam also caused the river to become a lake. One unfortunate soul was caught inbetween two of the avalanches on the highway, but managed to get out.
Looks like it will be weeks before these folks have road access outside again.

Sounds like that guy was lucky to get out. That ice lake is pretty cool though.
Going to need a big shovel for that roger.

Keystone Canyon is a pretty popular rafting area. Also the world Extreme Ski competition is held in the area.
Valdez is the snowiest town in the world, it averages over 320" a year. Two years ago they stopped counting at 500". The pass gets 900-1,000 inches a year.

Any way they can send that snow down to CA? We're dry as a bone right now. Pretty much written off steelhead season.

Sitka used to sell Ice from Blue Lake to the Bay area. Not a far fetched idea.

We need about 50,000,000 acre feet. Not even the Alyeska pipeline could bring us that.

Old Wally Hickle, when he was governor wanted to build a water pipeline from Alaska to California.

California gets two-thirds of its gasoline from Alaska, so why not water also?
That, in essence, is the proposal Gov. Walter J. Hickel of Alaska brought to Southern California today to solve this parched region's water problems. "We have an awful lot of fresh water," he said. "Can we get it down cheap enough? That depends on how thirsty you get."
Governor Hickel wants to build a pipeline to pump water 2,000 miles down the Pacific Coast, supplying nearly 10 percent of California's current water use. It has drawn fire from environmentalists, who maintain that it would not only cause environmental damage in Alaska but also encourage California to continue to waste water. 'A Thirsty Vampire'
"For years, California has acted like a thirsty vampire," said Robert Hattoy, regional director for the Sierra Club. "Building a pipeline would be like putting a faucet in a blood bank."
