If Jaime is 100% he'll start over Kelly and/or Lynn.
All depends on the shoulder this Spring though.

The biggest question mark entering the season is Jaime Garcia's surgically repaired shoulder. If it's healthy, one of Lynn or Kelly will be pushed to the bullpen.

Gonna be interesting for sure, Lynn is gonna have to work through his second half of the season issues

We need a left handed starter, so I really really hope Jaime will rebound well as he's our only left handed pitcher that could start, and you really don't want to a rotation of 5 RHP.
It was only a slight partial tear which is HUGE for that injury/procedure (which is why he tried to just pitch through it at first), and he's an offspeed pitcher which really helps as well.
Anibal Sanchez recovered from a full tear to end up being a stud, so I have hope that Jaime can as well especially when his wasn't close to a complete tear.

i'd for sure put garcia in the pen because i don't think he's as good as the top 6 and since he's coming off an injury it'll lessen the chances of a re-injury
i wouldn't care about having 5 righties until the playoffs, if then even

So, what's Bryan Price gonna do with Chapman this year? I hope he leaves him in the pen, but I doubt it.
he's definitely closing, although Price says get ready for 6 out closes instead of 3 out closings.

Garcia makes too much money for that, that is one "big" contract the Cardinals would like to have back.
He's not made for the pen though, which is why if he's healthy it's his spot in the rotation.
Lynn/Kelly can and already have been effective in the bullpen.

The thing people need to realize about Rosenthal is that his stuff plays up as a reliever. His velocity would go down and his stuff would be reduced if he had to pitch 5+ innings over a full season. My theory is that once you establish yourself as an elite closer, you stay there. Besides, they have beaucoup options in the rotation as it is.

Exactly. Garcia isn't a pitcher that is gonna blow you away or get you off balance after a starter is removed. He establishes a strike zone, and then hunt and pecks that motherfricker to death. Little fricker.

His stuff plays up as a starter, not a reliever.

Right, instead of throwing 99-100 for 15 pitches as a closer he'd tone it down to 95-98 consistently for stamina.
His offspeed pitches are great, he just never throws them as a closer because he doesn't have to, he'd mix a ton of offspeed in as a starter and extend his stamina there.
I watched him develop here in the minors, he has a great feel for being a starter he really mixed his pitches well and it was UGLY for the kids facing him. It's just insane that he's a lockdown potential all star closer after seeing him as a starter in the minors. You'd just never have expected it in a million years.

Yep. Love his changeup offspeed game. Some serious late break on that thing.
Almost, Chipper.

you say that like it's harder to be a closer than a starter

For some sure, for him no.

Yea Garcia isn't gonna be a bullpen guy, doesn't fit him or his contract

I think he can be as good as Kimbrel in the pen. At the same time, I think he's a TORP in the starting rotation. Great problem to have.

they may have wainwright, martinez, wacha, rosenthal, miller, and lynn, but joke's on them they have to pick five out of that group!!
of course they'll probably put kelly in the rotation too or some shite.
Deal Lynn. Number 1: Waino; Number 2: Wacha; Number 3: Kelly; Number 4: Martinez; Number 5: Miller; Closer: Rosenthal.

Same thing happened with Chapman. Flirt with starting him for a brief moment, let him setup for a little while, and then BAM. Dominant closer.
same with Marmol...oh wait
