If the idea is to give an automatic 7 for a touchdown with the option of going for an 8th point on a play where if you don't score, you lose a point and go back to 6, you're correct in what you say here.

But look at it this way. NBA players are better shooters than college players are. Check out the 3-point lines. Nothing wrong with doing something similar with NFL kickers. They kick better--no problem making it more of a challenge.
