Good points here. The key then I guess would be, identifying the measuring stick(s). I think if you start with an intelligent, open-minded and articulate group of people (in itself a subjective and tough thing to vet) then you have the basis of being able to cumulatively agreeing up some standards by which "great films" should be defined.
Tossing out the obvious jokers posting Good Burger and such, it's a interesting to see the diversity in what people believe is the best movie if all time.
I've never been a fan of the Godfather movies, but I am a fan of some of the older flicks where a story was told vs Hollywood just trying to entertain an audience for a few hours..
I watched the first half of Ben Hur on Sunday and will probably watch the 2nd half later this week..
..other movies that I believe are up there:
Moses (10 Commandments)
Shawshank
TGTB&TU
Star Wars, Ep 5: Empire Strikes Back
The Great Escape
Kelly's Heroes

Kelly's Heroes
Underrated - sometimes overshadowed by M*A*S*H - but one of the best "comedy" war films of all time (and is Mrs. Midnight's favorite war movie).
I find it to be very quotable and memorable. The anti-patriotic theme resounded for the time. Savalas gave one of his best performances and you can run down about 15 or so minor roles with fairly well-known (or would become) actors definitely NOT phoning it in.
Don't know if it is GOAT material - but all in all, my favorite "less than serious" war movie.
