Unless it's AP, why would you ever take a running back in the first round?

Yeah, all the other first round backs suck!

Signed,

Marshawn Lynch
Steven Jackson
Chris Johnson
Larry Johnson
Willis McGahee
Deangelo Williams
Etc.

I know plenty of first round backs bust, but about half of them pan out. It seems like a decent return on investment despite the short shelf life. It is not like all other first rounders pan out anyway.

I have zero problem with drafting a RB in the first round. Even safer picks like offensive tackles and edge rushers can flame out with a high pick like Vernon Gholston.

You have a point somewhat, but none of those guys are recent in the past five years except Johnson.

Look at 2013 class…had huge impact guys like Lacy, Bernard, Ball all drafted in 2-3 round. Then had Stacy and Ellington also have solid seasons after being grabbed late.

Give me Sankey or Carey in the second-third round and I'll be happy

Youre missing the point entirely. Its not that the 1st rounders will bust, its that there is no value for them there. Unless you are AP, there will be 4-5 comparable backs to that guy you select in the 1st that can be had in the middle rounds while you use that 1st rounder on an impact position like OL, QB, Pass rusher etc that have a clear difference in talent in later rounds.
