That's a ridiculous statement... Nirvana had the most "alt"/punk to them...

PJ was kind of generic arena rock and AIC was more "metal-ish" than anything else..

Them blowing up did not turn off the anyone (save maybe a few), though I'll give you thatButch Vig over produced that record...

I'll agree Nirvana was a sort of right place/right time band, when most people were totally sick of the hair band scene... but they still made a great record that facilitated the whole blow up of modern popular music a the time...
