I would find a doggie day care place that does boarding and bring the dog there. But don't wait till you go out of town. Get in the habit of bringing the dog there from time to time to get it socialized. Then when you go out of town it will be something the dog is familiar with already.

Let's review:
-dog won't eat for days when kenneled
-you won't let someone dog sit at your home
