Keeper Rules

I've had a 12 team league for the last 7 years, next year we voted to have one keeper for our roster starting next season. What is the best approach for doing this? I've heard of having to keep the guy you drafted in whatever your drafted him and forfeiting that round draft pick the following year. And I've also heard that you just pick one player keep him as your first round pick and start the draft like regular. All ideas welcomed. Thanks

Personally, I like value-based keeping. Where you draft a guy determines what pick he counts against the following year. You set up the "cost of keeper" value in advance.
For example, let's say your "cost of keeper" penalty is 2 rounds. If you draft a guy in the 9th round, he would count as your 7th round pick the following year if you kept him. In this format, keepers picked in the top 2 rounds would count as a 1st round pick or not be eligible to be kept, determined by your league rules.

i like keeping 1 player at the draft selection you got him at but can't keep anyone drafted before the 5th round.

thanks, how does it work with free agent pick ups? For example I picked up Zach Stacy... Am I fricked on keeping him?

Depends on what yall decide. I've seen FAs count as a mid-round pick or not be eligible for keeper status.

This is exactly how we do it and it works great for us.
Also, in order to be eligible for keeper, he must be drafted and remain on roster all year. Therefore, no FA pickups can be kept.

Thats how we do it. I prefer that over the "im gonna keep Megatron" type. It makes the draft more interesting and it makes it more difficult to find sleepers, because everyone is looking for them.

We keep 3, with an option for a rookie 4th. Players are kept in round drafted, FAs being last round. The catch is each player's salary is increased annually, and we operate under a cap.

My league just put in a rule that if you elect to keep a FA pickup, you lose the draft pick of the round he is projected to go in next year. Not my favorite solutuion, but just another option. I'm also in another one where the player must have been drafted and remained on your team all year long.

players are projected to go in different rounds. thats a dumb rule.

I agree. But the projection is based off our league's settings. In this case, it would be wherever NFL fantasty thinks they'll go.
It's dumb and I don't like it. I shouldn't be punished for picking up someone like Stacy off waivers; I'd just rather not be able to keep free agents than have that rule.

We prefer to reward good pickups.

We keep 4 and have no restrictions / costs or whatever on who you keep. Everyone must keep 4 and they can be anyone on your final roster.
We have a 1 week period after the season ends you can trade anyone on your roster for picks or players, after that you can still trade but all players involved in trades must be kept (keeps deep teams from trading players to weaker teams for picks)

How do you do the draft?
Posted on 1/2/14 at 12:54 pm to CBandits82
Reverse order of finish from the year before, keepers taken off the board first then we start in round 5

We have a 10 person league with up to two keepers.
Basically if you choose to keep a given player, it counts for your first and second round draft picks.
It's pretty easy and works out well enough. No one is forced to keep players.

Ours is if you drafted him from rounds 10 and on and kept him on the team the whole year, then he can be kept. His spot would take the place of the last round pick.
My 12th round pick/keeper this year: Alshon Jeffery
