As long as the format stays true to it's intent, best 4 teams in the playoff
this is the heart of the matter. who says the INTENT is to put the best 4 teams in the playoff?
and WHO defines BEST?
i am extremely skeptical of this new format. the nation rejected the BEST 2 provided by the BCS format and i believed that format did the best job possible. that's why alabama got a rematch. well, that rematch pissed off the non sec people and the playoff got legs.
i think it a naive notion that the best 4 will emerge. it will be the "committee" that decides the best 4, not the polls of thousands and thousands of informed voters. guess what? we are going to get a "balanced" plate of 4 teams; one from each super conference with the occassional team not in the super conference so as to avoid lawsuits.
i firmly believe this system will be nothing but a political exercise with the occasional socialistic flare. the BEST teams will be from disperse regions. the TV will love it (not to mention they will be very influential).
so much crap is gonna be raised the number of teams will quickly be change to 8.
welcome to America. the land of the commercial. the land of "fairness". the land of diversity. the land of the underdog. the land of the lowest common denominator.
oh, and MERRY CHRISTMAS. (the playoffs will still be fun even though LSU will be left out unless we are undefeated. we will be able to see the pac10, the big10 the sec and one other play each other every year.

The thing is they aren't bound by any rules or criteria they must follow. Remember my words, before its all said and done people will be wishing we still had the BCS.
Are you nuts?
Just doubling the field from 2 to 4 is a step in the right direction.
As for rules and criteria, pretty sure the general idea is to not duplicate tBCS mistakes.
The model is solid, absent any corruption, and the members already named seem solid.

C'mon gramps...the intent of tBCS was to match the best two, and to be quite frank, aside from the early years, they did a decent job overall.
This new system expands the margin of error twofold, that's a good thing.
As for your rather dumb remark about INTENT, just figure a old man has had a little too much juiced eggnog as you can't be serious with that shite.

"Absent any corruption" = naive
" members already named SEEM solid" = wait until they feel the heat.

Wow, cynical view to say the least.
Bottom line is 4 teams are better than 2.

Remember there is one guaranteed vote against LSU. MANNING IS ON THE COMMITTEE AND HE HATES LSU.

What bothers me the most is the selection committee. Regardless of the criteria, they will vote their preferences.
Say what you will about computers, but they will ALLWAYS consider the programmed criteria. Humans, not so much

Agreed....I am more than a bit skeptical of our new system...a secret panel of folks selecting the top teams based on secret criteria cannot end well, in my opinion...at least there is transparency in the current systems....

That's actually an LSU advantage.
Nobody will be able to say he shows us any favorism.

Great point until you consider computers are programmed by people with inherent bias as well.
Thus the wide disparity amongst computer-based ranking models such as we see today.
There is simply no viable way to separate the computer element from the human element when humans write the computer codes. Duh

You can program the computer to ignore any margin of victory over 28 points.
You can add more weight to defeating teams ranked in top 10, top 25 etc.
You can penalize teams for playing div. 2 or teams ranked in the bottom half of Div 1
You make all models adopt these criteria. Computers can
Be useful. Duh

Correct
quote:granted this is from Wikipedia but parameters above most likely would have eliminated Bama this year and 2011. The ONLY time, IMO, a conference will get a second team in is if several of the conferences have a two or three loss champion.
] Among the factors that the committee will weigh are strength of schedule, conference championships, team records, and head-to-head results,[5] plus other considerations such as injuries and weather.[20] Unlike the current BCS system, the AP Poll, Coaches' Poll, Harris poll, and computer rankings will not be used to make the selections.[8][14]

Programs should be rewarded for playing a tough SOS, and penalized if they don't. Just that simple.
Bingo! That simple step would work wonders for college football. The current outcome based scheduling without considering SOS to help teams in small conferences is killing NCAA football.

The committee could set the criteria.

Sure, computers can be programmed to do these simple tasks you speak of. But should they be allowed to 'choose' teams worth given they obviously never set an eye on a football game?
Of course not, and thusly should only be used as an arbitray reference point in a summation of value regarding football teams because otherwise we're left with nothing more than some geek's concept of what a good football team truly is.
Use computers as they were intended, a tool of man. Most certainly not the other way around. Duh
