Obviously our staff wanted C-Rob, but honestly, he has a better chance to step in at bama for Cyrus and play early. Not that I think that had anything to do with it b.c. the talented ones will play and play early (see la'el, turner, hawkins, and pocic for us)
I didn't realize our depth here
*** Assuming La'el goes pro and we get kelly
My projections as follows:
Left Tackle -- 1a. Pocic 1b. Hawkins 2. Washington 3. Kelly
Left Guard -- 1a. Vadal, 1b Boutte 2. Jonah Austin 3. Brumfield or clapp
Center -- 1a. Porter 1b Pocic (assuming he doesnt take the LT spot) 2. Malone 3. Dodd
Right Guard -- Trai turner 2a. Dodd 2b Fehoko 3. Brum or Clapp
Right Tackle (most interesting battle) - 1a. Hawkins 1b. washington 1c. Edinburg 1d. pocic 2. Jonah Austin 3. Kelly
Next year we will have :
3 Seniors - Fehoko, Porter, Washington
3 Juniors - Vadal, Turner, Austin
4 Sophomores - Boutte, Pocic, Hawkins(RS), Edinburg(RS),
2 Redshirt Freshman - Dodd, Malone
3 True Freshman - Clapp, Brumfield, and Kelly
That's 15 offensive lineman for 5 positions... round way of looking at that is three deep per every position.
Underlined players were incumbent starters. We return 4 of the 5.
I think we'll be alright with a three lineman haul this year!

We don't know who is coming back yet.

Who besides La'el is a risk to leave?
Posted on 12/14/13 at 2:25 pm to TheDrunkenTigah
turner or Vadal or Porter could - starters
washington fanaika could - reserves

We also don't know how they will pan out. Offensive line has been the worst position recruited under Les. It's either bad scouting, bad developing, or just getting beat for better prospects

Turner is a rSoph currently?
Posted on 12/14/13 at 2:26 pm to TheDrunkenTigah
Yes, I believe he is. Came in the same class as La'el who is a true junior.

The chances of Turner leaving are higher than people think.

Right, three years removed and draft eligible.
My only point is that it remains to be seen what the attitude of the teams draft eligible players is this year. Hopefully we don't see another mass exodus like last years defense, but we just don't know.

I agree, Verm, but ...
Hawkins (at least at right tackle)= solid
Pocic - kid is solid, don't care where you put him
Boutte - Les has raved about him, will be a mauler in the run game = solid
Clapp, Brumfield = I know these kids haven't stepped on campus but they will press for PT, in the very least make it a stiff competition

Of course, but how real do you think the risk is with Porter or Turner? I haven't seen them on any mock drafts, is there some other reason you're nervous besides last year's trend?

Heard some chatter, but after seeing Faulk leave last year off an ACL tear, hell anything is possible
Posted on 12/14/13 at 2:40 pm to TheDrunkenTigah
I mean he has been a two year starter for us and has graded out well in the run game so a run-oriented team like washington, pittsburg, minnesota, etc could nab him in the 4th - 7th rounds and he would make a roster.
I think he will come back, but I can see him leaving too.

I hear you, but hopefully guys look at the bad advice he got and stick around.

Turner is very solid, but he doesn't seem to me to have the measurables (size) that scouts drool over for guards, so I don't see him going before mid 3rd rd. Of course, I didn't think OBJ & Juice would go high enough to leave early, so what do I know. (Not they did much last year to make an early departure probable).

Not sure what the prototypical guard size in the nfl
but 6'3 and some change at 315 isn't too small.

I'm not so sure like others who think we'll have guys jump at every position. I don't think Olinemen (at least here) think that way. I think we'll be good too and three deep at the position which is why I don't think we really need another lineman unless he's too good to pass up. We could look to take 6 next year or 10 over the next two. After this year, we'll be loaded at in the secondary and at linebacker.

assuming we do, and I'm not even close to assuming that, this trend will be something the staff has to get a handle on quickly, or it may be it's downfall. You simply can't win championships without developed, experienced leadership to compliment the young studs. If they really are recruiting with the '3 and go pro' strategy, that needs to stop.

Would love to get an OL coach to develop these guys...
