I don't think Rettig's HS career can be used to define his future at LSU. Yeah, it was an air it out system for sure and the dude ran for his life most of the time. I have no doubt he needed to be coached up which is why he is behind at least Jennings. And btw, he is very mobile. Needed to build up that knee more to be able to showcase that.
Overall, we see time and time again where one loss in CFB is the difference between a NCG and a non-BCS bowl (for any team not named Bama). So not having a very good backup for even a half can be critical. Someone said we don't realize how good it is to be in this position... indeed. It's time for a run.

The dual-threat quarterback isn’t anything new to LSU — remember Marcus Randall, JaMarcus Russell, Matt Flynn and Jordan Jefferson?
Yeah - the best way to describe those, other than Russell would be "mobile" - Flynn and Randall, particularly, combined for about 300 carries (or so) and around 1000 yards. Jefferson combined for 359 carries and over 1000 yards (and yes, I realize sack yards come out of a QB's rushing yards) - but that was spread over 4 seasons.
Out of those, only Jefferson should be considered a true "dual threat" - at least as used at LSU.
(FTR Ryan Perrilloux was the last great dual threat QB at LSU.)

This could be the best group of kids we've ever had at the QB position. Let's see who emerges from the smoke!
Somebody already has. May not be who you prefer, but he has emerged. Hint: 99 yards do or die drive to avoid one of worse losses in Miles career. Said drive coming after virtually no real game experience beforehand. He exibited poise in the pocket (completion from endzone), good arm strength, good touch, escapability, completed passes to fullback, tightend, backup receiver and running back in one series. What more could you have asked for?
Consider the reaction on this board had LSU lost to SEC winless Arkansas. If you can't get behind him after that performance, you never will.

When you sign 2 QBs in the same class, more than likely, someone's going to get the shaft
How is getting beat out for a position getting the shaft? Rettig siad himself he was not ready.

Rettig played in an air it out system with very little talent around him.. Interceptions are to be expected in that case when you're the only legit talent out there.. Lets see how far he's come in understanding cams system before annointing Jennings the future.
At this point in their careers who would you annoint? They both have had equal opportuinty and Jennings has excelled over Rittig. Is there some other measure Jennings must meet in your mind? Have the rules been changed?
I have a suspicion that had Rettig come in and within a couple of months gained the backup job his true freshman year. Then when called upon, with no real game experience, delivered a 99 yard game winning drive to avoid a disasterous loss. And in that drive completed passes to 6 different receivers and ran 20+ yards for a first down. I doubt you would be reserving the spot for Jennings. Jenning has earned the right to be considered the future at QB at LSU. What freaking more must he do? He has done more in his true freshman year than the last two redshirted freshman Heisman winning QBs did in theirs.
