For me I would probably get a Browing X-bolt Composite Stalker in .308.
.22 inch barrel and composite stock (i'm very rough on hunting guns)
I'd put Leupold rings on it with a Nikon Buckmaster scope in 4-12x50.
This is strickly for deer hunting. The .308 is the perfect round for that. Short action gives you a lighter weight rifle (6lbs 5oz). Recoil isn't bad. And it's a perfect compromise for any shot from 5-300 yds.
