Furthermore, "Second in your division" can be coterminous with "second in the nation," as it was in 2011.
That mulligan was based on the brand name.
If Oklahoma or Texas had one loss (even to Iowa State), and Mississippi State's only loss was to LSU, State would not have gotten a rematch. The resumes would have been identical.

School - Computer ratings
Okie St. - 2 2 2 2 3 3 - (2.25)
Alabama - 2 2 3 3 3 3 - (2.75)
The two schools had similarly tough schedules with a slight edge to OSU. Alabama scored more than four times the amount of their opponents; OSU scored less than twice the amount of theirs. This does not factor into the computers, of course. If it did, Alabama would have been a unanimous #2. Alabama was #2 because they earned their ranking, as much as that sucks.

Yay. This guy gets it.
Which is part of my point in the OP.
There will only be certain teams that will be allowed to finish third in their conference and finish in the final four.
What 2011 taught us was that Oklahoma State is not one of those programs. Had Oklahoma State been Oklahoma or Texas, they play LSU.
This playoff is going to reward mediocrity among the "elite" programs. Just wait and see.
