The thing is, he died before he could give a more "serious" comedic effort. It seems many comics start with slapstick and then move on to show us some real acting chops.

We'll never know if he could have pulled off a role like that besides from being fat.

*I am not aware of a less slapstick role, so inform me if I missed something.

No idea there were death photos of him. Now I'm sad about his death all over again.
