Recap: Tigers Speed by Northwestern St, 88-74

Just a day after Northwestern State beat Auburn 111-92, LSU took control early and held on to beat a very good Northwestern State team. Andre Stringer scored his 1,000th career point and finished with a game high 21 points. O'Bryant was also able to score 21 points to go along with 14 rebounds.
Mickey and Hickey scored double digit points with 10 and 11 respectively. Jordan Mickey starts his college career with two consecutive double doubles after adding 13 rebounds, 6 blocks and 3 assists. He currently leads the SEC in blocks with 5.5 per game.
Northwestern State was losing at halftime by nine, the same amount they were losing by to Auburn before they were able to score 72 second half points. However, against this Tiger team, they were only able to score 43 in the second half and fell short.
The Stats:
LSU had 27 offensive rebounds and 64 overall. They outrebounded the Demons by 24. Andre Stringer
LSU had only 15 assists and 22 turnovers. LSU had too many traveling calls and Johnny O'Bryant turned it over 6 times.
LSU only committed 14 fouls. A vast improvement from the UMASS game where they had 20 in the first half.
LSU made 16 of 26 free throws. Still not where they want to be. They are shooting 60.8% on the season, which is 293rd in the NCAA.
Quick Observations:
The centers looked vastly improved from the first game. Darcy Malone had 5 points in 5 minutes including a beautiful three pointer and a very nice post-up reverse layup. Odo had 7 points and 8 rebounds in 13 minutes and played very well for the Tigers.
Malik Morgan looks much better this season. He isn't settling for long jump shots and his driving to the basket has gotten him to the free throw line 9 times (7/9 from line) with only 6 FG attempts.
JOB and Mickey need to work on not traveling during post moves. The two players combined for 8 turnovers, most while in the post.
Anthony Hickey may not start, however, he is LSU's point guard. Quarterman still has some developing, but shows some promise with his athletic ability and vision.
For the second straight game, Coach Jones played walk-on Eddlestone in the first half.
Player Grades:
Johnny O'Bryant (B+) O'Bryant had 21 points and 14 rebounds, however, his 6 turnovers really hurt the Tigers. He had 4 fouls for the second time in two games. Have to love his two "Shaq" dunks.
Shavon Coleman (C) Coleman didn't have a particularly impressive game. He had 4 points on 2 of 10 shooting. He added 4 rebounds and 3 assists along with 3 turnovers.
Jordan Mickey (A-) Mickey really impressed with his second consecutive double double to begin his career. He had 10 points, 13 rebounds, and 6 blocks. He added 3 assists on 2 turnovers in 30 minutes of action. Love his ability to pass from the post.
Tim Quarterman (C-) Tim had a poor performance, but he showed promise defensively. He scored 1 point, had 1 rebound, and a steal in 11 minutes.
Andre Stringer (B+) Stringer scored 21 points for the second time this year, but it took him 20 shots to do it. He was very active pulling down 7 rebounds and had 2 steals and an assist. He made 4 three pointers on 11 attempts.
John Odo (B+) Odo had a very efficient outing dropping 7 points and grabbing 8 boards on NSU. He was 3 of 6 from the field and added a steal.
Shane Hammink (B) Hammink didn't score, but he was able to get 4 rebounds and add an assist in 8 minutes. He was aggressive defensively and played relatively good basketball without taking a shot.
Darcy Malone (B+) Malone made both shot attempts, including a three point shot scoring 5 points in 5 minutes of action. He did have a turnover in the post but showed patience in the post and some nice moves making a reverse layup.
Anthony Hickey (A) Hickey played lights out. He had 11 points, 6 assists, 3 steals, 3 rebounds, and only 1 turnover. Although he came off the bench, he played 29 minutes and made 3 of 7 from three point range.
Malik Morgan (A-) Morgan looked much better on offense than a year ago. He drove to the basket hard and picked up 7 free throw attempts making 6. He had 8 points and 6 rebounds in 20 minutes of action. His defense also looked improved.
The Tigers host UNO Tuesday in the PMAC at 7:00 pm. Come check out the basketball Tigers in action.

I really want to see Hammink assert himself more offensively. You can tell he's a pretty cerebral player by his rebounding and passing. But the last thing on his mind when he has the ball is taking a shot.
I tend to do the same thing when I'm the only white guy on the court to though.

Mickey is such a beast

Where does Mickey stand nationally with blocks? He has a huge margin in the sec.

Jordan o'bryant, johnny martin and jarrell mickey are a heck of a front line

Poor defense and poor free throw shooting is going to kill this team when the competition (top of the SEC and beyond) gets better.
Also, I can't understand why we do not dish the ball to the second guy on multiple 2 on 1 fast breaks the other night. Each time we came away with no points on those fast breaks.
Looks like we have a recruiter and motivator as a coach but not a X and O coach. I understand that recruiting is 80% of college coaching but it sure would be nice to have X and O's to go with the recruiting. Then again, Johnny did learn his coaching style from Daddy Dale.

He is third in the NCAA. Leader is 6.5per and second is 6.0per

Not sure about most of this.
FT shooting is poor.
Defense isn't necessarily poor. In fact using some advanced metrics LSU has a top 50 defense. We have played two offensively productive squads. Don't believe it's defense.
I'm very comfortable with Jones' X's and O's.
I do agree that on fast breaks they have missed passes that would have created easier shots.

Jordan Mickey was also named SEC Freshman of the Week. Congrats to him!

So this:
Immediately leads you to believe this?
Was this the first game you've watch him coach?

Poor FT shooting (which was around 60% last year and this year = no improvement), a mediocre defense that seems to let people drive by them at times (this is still a watch in progress, but I expect it is not going to get much better), and not making a pass on fast breaks points towards a lack of coaching.
Look at the programs that are top tier each year with great coaches. They always play defense, are good free throw shooters, and are unselfish on offense. The ebbs and flows of these top programs stem from the offense talent that the team has from year-to-year (recruiting) but coaching is always consistent in the other phases of the game.

On a positive note, I do like the way that JJ presses.

I think the defense is relatively solid. We made a vast improvement in fouling from game 1 to game 2. We allowed only 0.87 points per possession in the Northwestern St game. Northwestern St scored 1.31 points per possession against Auburn.
We do allow some players to get by off the dribble, but that is one of the nice things about having a player like Mickey in the middle. I still think we want to stay in from of the players better, however, I don't think it means we play poor defense.

Why do you not expect it to get much better? Just for the sake of being negative? We've played two games against two very strong offenses.

So you're saying he's purposefully ignoring it? He had great FT shooting teams at UNT.

Chaz Williams is one of the best PGs LSU will play all year and NSU runs the floor a ton, which leads to that. It's not like NSU was able to just drive at will though. If anything, I was very proud of the defense last night. Not many teams are going to hold them under 75.

Because the competition will be better and if you do not know how to move your feet against a team that is not going to make the tournament you won't move your feet against a tournament team. Defense is largely a skill that someone (coach) makes you do. Trent Johnson could coach defense but was apparently lazy or did not care when it came to recruiting.
Don't get me wrong, the program is on the upswing and getting more competitive. I just like to see coaching to go along with talent. Another aspect of coaching is running some type of half court offense when the fast break is not there. We seem to have some trouble with running a half court offense.

Umass and Northwestern are both tournament teams with fast-paced and high-scoring offenses, but that's beyond the point.

So, you're saying Johnny doesn't coach defense? I really don't understand. Our team is incredibly long and athletic and will only improve on the defensive end as they gel further. I love how we've played 2 games against quality opponents, yet you know for sure that none of our weaknesses will improve.

This. LSU will only play a maximum of 6 more tournament teams (Memphis/Ok. State, UK, UF, UT, Bama/Ole Miss as fringe teams).
