wife and I have been married for almost 4 years, living together for 7. we still have separate accounts and just split bills. it really hasn't been a big deal.

I don't understand this. It seems like it would be very odd.

Do you split the check when you go to dinner?
Do you pay your own way at the movies?
Did you pay for your own cars?
What about daycare and when children come along? Who pays for the kids' food, clothes, medical bills, etc?

That's what I would recommend. That way you don't have to keep track of each other stopping at the grocery store or filling the gas tank.
