You knuckleheads are taking this too seriously.
The eagles are a deus ex machina device. Yes, they could have taken someone to Mt Doom and yes, that person would have been possibly possessed to the point of being unable to destroy the ring.
However Gandalf didn't know that for sure. It wouldn't have been any different than sending Frodo walking. Except it would have taken tremendously less time and who knows in such a short amount of time, perhaps Frodo would have had the willpower to toss it in.

Yes he did. Hence his fear of the ring, as well as everyone else that was wise who came into contact with it not wanting to touch it.
Frodo was only able to carry it with him and be seemingly unaffected because hobbits had such little power to begin with that the ring couldn't do much through them.
But, whatever....
