I think they're all the same species (field pea) but just different cultivars. It's like asking if a Granny Smith and a Red Delicious are the same thing. They're both from the same type of tree that can breed with each other, but they're different varieties.
It's been a while since I read that chapter in "On Food and Cooking", though, so take it for what it's worth.
