It seems to me like there was something else going on with this situation that the general public may not be aware of.
Maybe, maybe not. Probably just a classy move by Oakland. They knew he wasn't the future QB there, and they're already on the hook to pay him, so it was a generous move to release him so he could try to catch on with another team in desparate need of a QB right now.
