What are the chances of getting that field position again? Very slim.
You are going to have to score a touchdown no matter what.
Might as well go for it when you are only 10 yards out instead of throwing hail marys after the onside kick and praying for a miracle.

this situation came up in the Chalmette/Belle Chasse game and our QB made a dash for the end zone on a QB draw, but was judged to have fumbled when he got in (PA Announcer: TOUCHDOWN!!!... shite, yes he really said that- fumble on the play...) 
, and Belle Chasse recovered
when you get to that point in the game, you want plays and time more than anything with no timeouts. you're gonna have to onside anyway, might as well have as much time as possible...
