I have heard the growl, what I would consider a string of very low grunts, in two occasions. Injured and immobile hog, or hog that has winded you but is not sure what you are yet.

Had a big boar wind me across a little bayou last year. That big bastard started making sounds that made my skin crawl. He walked up and down the bayou bank for a good 10 minutes sniffing, grunting and growling until he finally mosied on his way. He DEFINITELY wasn't scared of me.
