It's about time they solve this tragedy. Hopefully all other states will follow suit. I'm hoping we can get all the lead fishing weights off the shelves soon too. Tungsten is the way to go.

Despite your sarcasm, it is the ingestion of lead that is important, not simply placing the lead in water.

The leftover lead from before the ban was implemented is embedded well below the foraging zone for waterfowl. So despite lead being found naturally in the ground, it doesn't matter because you'd have to actually eat it for anything to happen. Ducks use their gizzards to grind up their food and need grit to do so, so if lead is available they will eat it right up just as if it were a rock or something. I work for the USGS so I may be biased but I wouldn't doubt their numbers on lead per acre. California has long had the longest waterfowl season (105 days right now I believe) and it's one of the top harvest states. I imagine most of you are waterfowl hunters (myself included) so it's probably best we educate ourselves before prematurely bitching about the government. With that being said, I don't believe lead should be banned statewide, that's just Democrats being Democrats and overreacting, but then again, if you don't like it then don't live in California.

Google Catahoula Lake and lead poisioning if you guys want to learn about the effects it has.

I just saw a moment to slip in and throw out some knowledge so there you go.
