Exactly.

The Pelicans basically paid money to avoid the risk and guess-work of the draft process.

They drafted Davis and traded for Gordon, Anderson, Evans and Holiday. If they'd managed to draft those guys in some combination, Demps would be looked at as some draft genius. What doesn't it matter if they didn't actually draft them? They're there. And if they did actually work out as draft picks, you'd have to pay them eventually. Ask OKC.

Plus if this whole thing goes to shite, guys get injured, whatever, they still keep their pick if its top 5.
