The small ones actually do better than the big names in some cases bc they can buy gas from whomever vs me having to buy from exxon and shell distributors. The savings can be significant. The other stores that are not name brand and geared toward poor people make money in tons of ways you wouldn't imagine
1.cashing checks
2.selling individual cigars and papers
3.slots
It sounds funny but I have the gamut of stores, one is in a very expensive neighborhood in highland village and sells very little inside, as wealthier people don't shop at the gas station but I can charge more for gas. Then I have one in an awful neighborhood and I cash $75k/week in checks and sell 5,000 individual cigars/month ....for blunts...you wouldn't believe how profitable that is. Poor people love to buy 1 for $1 vs a pack of 5 for $3.49. Don't even get me started on the slots, I can't believe they have a license from the city....but they do. Sadly poor people like blowing their check on these slots.Poor people also buy everything at the gas station, every time a new candy bar or drink is available it sells out like crazy for a few weeks. Some say lottery is a tax on the poor, I believe that, my store in highland village sells maybe $10,000/month in lotto. My store in the slums of Dallas, sells $130k/month of lotto.....granted at a 5% split but still just saying, the no brand stores kill it
In certain businesses you want to target the lower income people, this is one of those businesses
